New York City Mayor’s Comments on Israel Attack Spur Debate

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces criticism for remarks about the October 7, 2023, assault on Israel. His statement acknowledged Hamas’ attack on Israel, resulting in over 1,100 Israeli deaths and more than 250 hostages taken by the group. However, he focused heavily on criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza over the past three years.

“The suffering did not begin nor end that day,” Mamdani stated. He accused the Israeli government of ongoing genocide in Gaza, claiming over 74,000 Palestinians, including 21,000 children, have been killed. He also mentioned continued fatalities since a ceasefire, with more than 1,400 Palestinians losing their lives.

MAMDANI DOUBLES DOWN ON ANTI-ISRAEL OCT 7 STATEMENT AFTER BACKLASH

In his continued remarks, Mamdani accused Israel of intensifying suffering with attacks on ambulances, residential areas, and blocking food aid. He highlighted that many New Yorkers mourn with this grief, knowing their taxes support what he termed as war crimes.

Mamdani did not mention New York City’s Jewish community, which counts nearly 1 million members, according to a UJA-Federation study from 2023. While Rep. Dan Goldman criticized Mamdani’s comments, powerful New York Democrats, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have not publicly reacted.

Goldman described Mamdani’s statement as reprehensible, accusing him of voicing disputed claims that offend those he pretends to grieve with. Meanwhile, neither Schumer nor Jeffries commented directly on Mamdani’s remarks but issued statements about the October 7 attack.

Schumer, who is Jewish, marked the attack as the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. His support for Israel remains a contentious issue among Senate Democrats, with some voicing concerns over arms funding during the ongoing Gaza conflict.

In his statement, Schumer reiterated support for Israel’s security and aid for Palestinians. He called for peace efforts leading to a two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians coexist in peace.

Jeffries aligned similarly, stating the Jewish struggle for survival is historically continuous. He condemned the suffering in Gaza and urged drastic changes in U.S. policy to ensure Palestinian statehood and dignity.
