Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents flattened a significant tree in Lochiel, Arizona, on Monday. Activists had occupied the tree for over two months, aiming to obstruct wall construction at the border.
This tree, a 150-year-old cottonwood, had become a symbol of the protest against the construction. Activists had been using the tree as a platform to draw attention to their cause and delay the building efforts.
Following the removal of the old tree, activists quickly took up residence in another nearby tree. Their commitment to the cause persists despite setbacks.
The occupied tree served as a focal point for the group’s environmental and political stance. They assert that the CBP’s actions harm the local ecosystem and disregard conservation efforts.
