Luka Dončić enters the 2026-27 NBA season as the standout star for the Los Angeles Lakers, while LeBron James moves on to a new venture with the Philadelphia 76ers. Fans once expected this duo to bring another championship to Los Angeles, but expectations went unmet.
Dončić believes last season was their opportunity, and he admits fault for how events unfolded. In a critical moment of the season, the Lakers displayed dominance with a 16-2 record. They were set to face the Western Conference’s powerhouse, the Oklahoma City Thunder. Dončić, aiming for an MVP, played a crucial role, but the Thunder defeated the Lakers decisively, 139-96.
During this game, Dončić felt a hamstring issue in the second quarter. Despite the concern, he continued to play aggressively, leading to a significant injury. In the second half, he aggravated a Grade 2 hamstring strain, sidelining him for the rest of the regular season and the entire postseason. This absence was a critical blow to the Lakers’ championship hopes.
“When it comes to my spirit of trying to win, I am just stubborn,” Dončić told Sports Illustrated. “I felt in the first half I should have stopped. I definitely regret it.”
With Dončić out, LeBron James had to elevate his performance during the playoffs. He led the team past the Houston Rockets, but the Thunder again proved too formidable in the second round. The absence of Dončić left questions about what might have happened if the roster had been fully healthy against the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks in the Finals.
Scott Thompson, a sports writer for Fox News Digital, notes that the opportunity was lost and remains a point of reflection for Dončić and the franchise.
