Currently, two tropical storms are active in the Pacific Ocean, impacting both Mexico and parts of the United States.
Pacific Storms: Simon and Rachel
Simon, now a Category 4 hurricane, is moving closer to Mexico’s southwestern coast. Starting tomorrow, it is likely to bring intense rainfall, which carries risks of dangerous flooding and mudslides.
Rachel has transformed into a post-tropical cyclone. It is predicted to deliver strong winds and rain in northern Mexico and Southern California soon.
Tornadoes in the Wake of Isaias
The U.S. Storm Prediction Center confirmed 13 tornado reports connected to post-tropical cyclone Isaias. These reports mostly emerged from areas along the Georgia and South Carolina border.
A tornado in Waynesboro, Georgia destroyed several homes and toppled farm equipment and power lines on Highway 80. The Burke County Emergency Management Agency urges residents to email reports of storm damage to local officials.
Another tornado in Allendale, South Carolina, caused major damage to three out of four affected homes. In Hunters, Georgia, multiple homes may have suffered tornado damage, verified by a 911 call center.
Although many reports came in from Barnwell, South Carolina, some might refer to the same tornado. Verification occurs once the National Weather Service inspects the damage site.
Power Outages Following Isaias
Post-tropical cyclone Isaias resulted in almost 500,000 utility customers losing power across several states.
- Florida: Over 363,000 outages
- Alabama: Nearly 97,000 outages
- Georgia: About 14,500 outages
- South Carolina: Approximately 4,700 outages
- North Carolina: Just over 7,500 outages
- Tennessee: Around 1,300 outages
Governor Ron DeSantis confirmed the Florida Highway Patrol is supporting utility crews’ restoration efforts.
Business Impact
In Panama City Beach, Florida, the Angry Tuna Seafood Company owner Sean Palamarczuk is concerned. He estimates structural damage costs from the storm near $50,000.
Unable to access electricity, he is worried about spoilage of refrigerated inventory, striving to keep them iced and closed to prevent further loss.
Severe Damage Reports
“It sounded like a freight train,” Jayme Mitich recalls of storm-related damages in her Florida apartment.
Widespread destruction left PowerOutage.us tracking 872,000 customers without power nationwide.
This included Florida with 434,275 outages and Alabama reporting 316,811 affected customers.
Tragic Losses
In tragic incidents, Isaias was responsible for fatal tree collapses in Florida and Alabama.
A Pensacola woman died after a tree fell on her home, prompting storm-related fatality fears.
Further, in Escambia County, a second death was attributed to generator misuse, reinforcing safety measures.
Public Notices and Effects
Florida airports remain open, although safety caution persists. Pensacola State College extended its closure through Monday due to area clean-up needs.
The iconic Waffle House chain closures amplify storm severity, serving as indirect warnings of disaster impact.
Sporting and Political Adjustments
Due to the storm, a NASCAR race in North Carolina faced postponement until conditions stabilise.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump announced he would not attend the Alabama-Georgia game, emphasizing readiness from essential personnel.
This storm system remains a crucial concern for communities, highlighting preparedness and response measures as vital priorities.
