Alabama Crimson Tide had a slim opportunity for a last-minute win against Georgia, but an ill-timed foul sealed Alabama’s fate. With just over two minutes left, No. 2 Georgia faced a third-and-2 on their field. Alabama’s defensive back, Dijon Lee, committed a costly penalty.
Lee grabbed a Georgia player by the jersey, striking him twice in the face. This earned Alabama a flag and Georgia an automatic first down. Alabama had exhausted their timeouts, allowing Georgia to run out the clock on Saturday.
Alabama’s head coach, Kalen DeBoer, expressed clear frustration. As Lee returned to the sidelines, DeBoer was visibly angry, reportedly telling Lee that he “just cost us the d— game.” Although initially dismissive of the coach’s comments, Lee had to face the consequences of his actions.
Before this incident, DeBoer was already under pressure. Alabama was still searching for a crucial score. During the last three minutes, Alabama’s quarterback, Keelon Russell, was sacked out of field goal range. Any hope of tying the game at 20 slipped away, leading Alabama to punt and lose possession for the remainder of the game.
Georgia capitalized on their advantage, maintaining their perfect 6-0 record. This game marked Alabama’s first loss of the season, a significant shift in their campaign.
