John Nagel, a former state trooper, has criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar and the Democratic Party for the increasing violence linked to Somali-American gangs in the Twin Cities. Residents in Eden Prairie and surrounding areas are concerned for their safety following several gang-related incidents. These include a shooting at an Eden Prairie high school football game and over 100 shell casings found in Bloomington.
Nagel stated in an interview with Fox News Digital, “Where is Ilhan Omar in all of this?” He questions Omar’s presence and involvement, suggesting that she should be actively addressing these issues.
“As a congressman representing this area, she should be at these meetings or issuing statements,” Nagel emphasized.
Nagel also criticized other Minnesota Democrats, such as Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, for not supporting law enforcement effectively. He argued that politicians restrain officers from taking necessary actions due to their soft-on-crime stance.
Nagel expressed frustration over the lack of enforcement from leaders like Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison. According to him, the majority of Democrats hesitate to support strict law enforcement, while the public desires stronger measures.
Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher shared similar concerns during a press conference. He stressed the importance of holding gang members accountable and urged Moriarty’s office to be more assertive in prosecuting juveniles.
Adam Abdihakeem Adam, 18, was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and second-degree riot related to the Eden Prairie football game shooting. Moriarty stated that Adam would face consequences, emphasizing the need for professional, coordinated responses to community violence.
Fletcher clarified misconceptions about the ethnicity of gang members, noting that most are Somali. He cautioned against using generalized terms like “East African,” which can be misleading.
Nagel insisted that addressing Somali gangs isn’t prejudiced, and law enforcement targets those committing crimes without considering their ethnicity.
Nagel argued, “We have Latino gangs and Asian gangs and Black gangs, and we have Somali gangs. I’m a police officer. I don’t care what color you are.”
To combat gang violence, Nagel proposed a gang task force and stressed using existing laws rather than introducing new ones. He urged for arrests and incarceration to prevent further violence.
Nagel challenges Omar and Independent candidate DeVelle Jackson in the upcoming elections in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
