Hurricane Isaias wrought havoc from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the Carolinas, beginning its assault near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 storm. The hurricane landed on Friday night, triggering a fury across the Southeast. Tragically, it claimed two lives in both Florida and Alabama.
The storm’s intense wind gusts, captured in Milton, Florida, 15 miles from shore, felled a towering tree onto a house. Phyllis Hennebery, a resident, described her disbelief as the tree damaged her ceiling while she lay in her room. ‘I never expected to be 77 years old and go through this,’ she shared, illustrating the damage to CBS News.
Beyond uprooting homes and stripping roofs off apartments, the hurricane left more than 150,000 Floridians and over 20,000 Alabamans without power on Monday morning, according to poweroutage.us. Pastor Jonathan Kaushal and his church group provided food and water for those affected. ‘Lots of people in need after the hurricane and so we just want to be there for the community,’ he said.
The storm’s remains triggered at least eight verified tornadoes in Georgia and the Carolinas. In western North Carolina, more than six inches of rain overflowed roads. One damaging tornado tore off a home’s roof about 90 miles west of Charleston.
Meanwhile, the West Coast faced its own battle with Tropical Storm Rachel, unleashing 8-foot waves upon beachfront homes near Los Angeles. The Coast Guard airlifted a man trapped on a sailboat onshore Sunday morning. Floodwater inundated southern Nevada, submerging the Las Vegas Strip.
Utah also suffered during the Moab 240, a five-day ultramarathon, where around 70 runners were evacuated by bus due to perilous floods.
