Chronic absenteeism has emerged as a significant national issue since the pandemic began. While much attention focuses on teenagers who are disengaged from school, this overlooks the significant absenteeism among younger students. Alarmingly, about 35% of kindergartners nationwide are chronically absent.
Fortunately, Maryland reports a lower rate of absenteeism among its young students compared to the national average. Despite this, the state still faces challenges in reducing absenteeism to an acceptable level.
