A traveler faced a surprising twist during airport security checks when TSA officers detected something peculiar hidden within a piece of computer equipment. The incident occurred at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona.
During routine security screening, an unidentified passenger attracted attention when TSA Officer Logan Stortz noticed unusual mass and wiring inside an Apple Mac mini desktop computer on the X-ray machine. Initially, Stortz suspected it might be part of an internal TSA test. However, upon further examination, the officer discovered suspected drugs concealed within the device. The substances included suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and ketamine, as reported in a TSA release on October 9.
Lead TSA Officer Logan Stortz made the initial discovery while examining the passenger’s carry-on bag, suspecting it might be an internal test. TSA Officer Isaiah Martinez Jr. also searched the carry-on and discussed suspicions with Stortz, realizing the situation required immediate attention and notifying a supervisor.
‘Initially, I thought this might be a test run by one of the many levels of testing teams within TSA,’ Stortz mentioned. ‘When I found out it was drugs, I was very surprised.’
TSA officers in Phoenix located suspected drugs wrapped in plastic inside the modified Apple Mac mini at the security checkpoint. The discovery prompted a second screening revealing tampered areas and plastic-wrapped materials, including a crystallized substance and an orange pill-like item. TSA explosives specialist Robert Rosas Perez II halted procedures and confirmed the presence of suspected illegal substances.
Law enforcement was alerted to the checkpoint, leading to the passenger’s arrest by Phoenix police. Although the passenger’s identity remains undisclosed, preliminary field-testing confirmed the presence of suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and ketamine.
‘The way this was concealed was unusual,’ Supervisory TSA Officer Emily Price remarked. Despite this unusual method, attempts to smuggle illegal or prohibited items through airport security may be more common than travelers presume.
TSA emphasized its main role at checkpoints is detecting weapons, explosives, and other security threats to aviation rather than focusing on drug enforcement. When TSA officers encounter drugs during screening, law enforcement gets notified.
Frequent traveler attempts to transport illicit items through checkpoints underscore the agency’s vigilance and emphasize security priorities to maintain aviation safety.
