American Airlines has ceased operations to three locations: Santa Maria, California; Tijuana, Mexico; and Doha, Qatar. This decision impacts travelers by reducing available flight options from these locations.
According to Simple Flying and aviation analytics firm Cirium, this change means Santa Maria is now without a service from a major U.S. airline, while Tijuana loses its only nonstop connection from a U.S. carrier.
“Unfortunately, flights to SMX did not meet performance expectations,” said an American Airlines spokesperson regarding the cessation of service to Santa Maria.
Before its departure, American Airlines operated under the American Eagle brand with SkyWest Airlines. Now, Allegiant Air remains the only commercial airline at Santa Maria, providing flights to Las Vegas.
In Philadelphia, Qatar Airways has taken over the route to Doha, restoring nonstop service after American Airlines halted its operations. This decision follows regional disruptions reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
American cited performance shortfalls as the reason for cutting the Philadelphia-to-Doha and Tijuana routes. A spokesperson stated the decision was made to optimize the airline’s network and fleet allocation.
Route cancellations are a typical aspect of airline operations, as described by Steven Arroyo, an aviation safety expert. When a route consistently loses money, airlines are likely to cancel it to maintain efficiency.
“If airlines are consistently not making money on a route, they’re going to pull out,” said Arroyo.
Travelers are advised to stay informed about their planned routes and ticket prices. Arroyo recommends researching and monitoring travel plans, particularly those to the Middle East.
For those traveling to the Gulf region, Arroyo suggests keeping a close watch on flight schedules and considering alternative arrangements, as route changes might affect planned itineraries.
