Netflix has greenlit a new documentary titled Untold: Wide Deceiver, focusing on a deceptive scam in the sports world. The documentary centers on Daejon Love, a 35-year-old man who impersonated a San Francisco 49ers player to swindle over $1.3 million from women.
An FBI affidavit reveals how Love, alongside 18-year-old accomplice Taylor Jamie Chan, deceived 26 women using a fake persona. They employed dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and Facebook Dating to find targets in California, Oregon, and Washington.
Love went to great lengths to maintain his ruse, using football imagery in elaborate ways. He staged fake workouts, filming himself running routes on public beaches with a replica 49ers helmet. He even staged a mock contract signing, showing off team gear and pretending to have an injured finger to explain not playing.
The deception unraveled when the FBI arrested Love and Chan in Boise, Idaho. Love now faces federal charges of conspiracy and wire fraud. During the investigation, authorities discovered an Instagram account displaying 49ers gear and luxury cars, adding to his fake NFL persona.
Victims were persuaded to take out high-interest loans, supposedly to fund investment opportunities. However, none of the money was invested. Love spent the funds on luxury items and vacations, cutting off contact once questioned. He has pled not guilty and is held without bail, awaiting trial on December 15.
