Kimberly Guilfoyle Faces Defamation Lawsuit Amid Resignation Controversy

Defamation Lawsuit Filed by Trump Donor

Kimberly Guilfoyle is involved in a defamation lawsuit following allegations that led to her resignation as U.S. ambassador to Greece. Eric Deters, a Trump donor, filed the lawsuit in Kentucky’s Kenton Circuit Court against Guilfoyle and attorneys Jesse Binnall and David M. Schwartz. The suit accuses them of defamation and false-light invasion of privacy. A breach-of-contract claim against Guilfoyle is also included. Deters seeks compensatory and punitive damages and has asked for a jury trial.

This action is the latest development in a public conflict between Guilfoyle and Deters. He claims to have paid Guilfoyle approximately $300,000 for appearances at his conservative Freedom Fest events. The lawsuit emerged just days after Guilfoyle’s resignation following reports of her interactions with Deters. Despite the charges, Guilfoyle denies wrongdoing and plans to defend her reputation vigorously.

Background of the Allegations

The dispute intensified when reports surfaced that Guilfoyle and her legal team allegedly described Deters as a “known blackmailer.” Deters refutes these claims, insisting the provided text exchanges are genuine. Additionally, he disputes allegations of owing money to Guilfoyle.

Issues regarding a $100,000 payment to Guilfoyle’s American Express account were focal. Deters claimed this was requested before her Senate confirmation hearing as part of a “pay-to-play” deal. Guilfoyle’s legal team argues that the money was for legitimate past work.

Threat to Release a Damaging Recording

Following the lawsuit, Deters posted a Facebook video, threatening to expose a 16-minute phone recording alleged to contain damaging information about Guilfoyle. He claimed this could impact the Trump administration and political figures JD Vance and Marco Rubio. The recording’s details remained undisclosed at that time.

National Attention and Guilfoyle’s Resignation

The Wall Street Journal highlighted these issues on October 8, drawing public interest. Allegations included Guilfoyle’s request for monetary favors in exchange for influence over senior Trump administration officials. Additionally, questions arose about her ambassadorial conduct, such as privately funded travel and business activities.

In response, the White House examined the situation and expressed dissatisfaction. On October 10, Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced Guilfoyle’s resignation, acknowledging her past contributions while distancing the administration from the allegations.

Guilfoyle described her resignation as a significant honor, yet firmly rejected the claims. She committed to defending her integrity and efforts throughout her public service career. The controversy now proceeds in court, following her departure from the ambassadorial position.
