Claire Elmer, a reporter for KTVZ in Bend, reflected on the emotional impact of the day’s tragic events. Speaking at a community vigil at Drake Park, Elmer shared her experience growing up in Bend and noted how unexpected and heavy such tragedies felt in one’s own community. As the community gathered to support each other, Elmer expressed her condolences and solidarity with those affected, stating, “Our thoughts are with those affected and we are sending love and support to everyone impacted by this terrible tragedy.”
Earlier, Elmer was present at a unification center where children and families reunited after the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. Authorities confirmed the shooter was a 16-year-old who also died in the incident.
“There are simply no words for the loss that we have suffered today,” Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler said at the vigil, urging the community to support one another during this dark time. Kebler, also a parent, emphasized the need for communal support as the city grapples with the tragedy.
Governor Tina Kotek praised the courage of a community member who intervened heroically to prevent further loss of life, acknowledging the emotional burden carried by those involved.
At the unification center, Mindy Corley, the aunt of a fifth grader at Silver Rail Elementary, conveyed her nephew’s fear and desire to reunite with his parents. Corley emphasized the collective impact on central Oregon, affirming that the community comes together in times of adversity.
“School should be a safe place where children can learn and feel secure,” Mayor Kebler stated, calling for community support and resilience.
ATF agents urgently traced the suspect’s gun as part of the ongoing investigation, with results already obtained. The suspect had forced entry by shooting at locked doors, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz explained. The department had undergone active threat training at a local high school two months prior, an unfortunate necessity in preparation for such incidents.
A community member’s intervention was pivotal, Krantz shared, pursuing the suspect into the school and engaging him. Many 911 calls reported the shooter entering the school shortly after police received an initial report of shots fired at a vehicle.
Details emerged about the victims: tragically, three children aged 5, 8, and 11 years old, alongside a teacher, were killed.
Two critically injured individuals, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, were transported to St. Charles Medical Center for treatment.
The suspect, identified as a 16-year-old resident, remains a focal point of the investigation, with police withholding details about his possible connections to the school.
Authorities, including ATF and FBI agents, are thoroughly investigating the incident.
School district officials have announced a cancellation of classes and activities across Bend-La Pine Schools, emphasizing the availability of crisis counselors at Bend’s Central Library for those affected.
Within three minutes of receiving dispatch calls, Bend police officers arrived on the scene, epitomizing their preparedness and rapid response. The timeline of events highlights the urgency and effectiveness of the law enforcement’s actions in a critical moment.
