Elon Musk showcased a Tesla Roadster capable of hovering at a SpaceX facility in Texas. The demonstration attracted buzz on social media, with reactions from politicians, celebrities, and Tesla fans who likened it to science fiction.
Notable figures such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Kari Lake, and Spencer Pratt expressed awe at the vehicle’s ability to hover and maneuver in a video clip that rapidly garnered 1.7 million views.
Insights on the ‘Flying’ Roadster
The footage surprised many online viewers, but Musk has long suggested that the next-generation Roadster might blend car and aircraft features using a SpaceX-inspired thruster package. He had previously hinted at the vehicle’s potential to hover and execute short jumps utilizing cold-gas thrusters before the recent demonstration.
The new Tesla Roadster was revealed during a livestream at SpaceX’s test facility in McGregor, Texas. The event featured Musk, Tesla design chief Franz von Holzhausen, and vice president of vehicle engineering Lars Moravy.
Musk mentioned that attendees would witness “some crazy stuff” resulting from the collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, referring to them as the foremost car and rocket companies.
Musk claimed it was “better than any James Bond car,” but noted that “success is not guaranteed.” Although he expressed confidence that the vehicle would function, he also reassured the crowd about safety by stating that they were “at a safe distance.” While he emphasized the excitement of the project, he acknowledged that the vehicle was not designed with primary safety in mind.
During the presentation, Tesla claimed the Roadster can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under one second. Musk stated that production is expected to start in 2028, approximately a decade after the initial Roadster unveiling and reservation acceptance.
Potential Pricing for a Flying Tesla
Tesla has yet to announce new pricing after the recent reveal. Initially, the base model Roadster had a price tag of $200,000, while a limited “Founders Series” version was priced at $250,000. Due to years of delays, inflation, and the added SpaceX package, analysts predict significantly higher prices for any future production model.
Road Use of the Hovering Roadster
It’s uncertain whether the hovering Roadster will be usable on public roads. Experts have suggested that any vehicle capable of lifting off would be subject to intense scrutiny from federal regulators. According to pre-launch reports, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) generally considers anything that hovers over the ground as an aircraft and already has specific regulations for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs).
Industry observers say future Roadster flight capabilities would likely be confined to controlled areas rather than unrestricted public road usage. The FAA’s flight restrictions around Tesla’s Texas test site before the launch hint at possible regulatory action preceding an unusual test.
Musk’s Longstanding Promise of a ‘Flying’ Roadster
Thursday’s showcase represented the latest development in one of Musk’s longstanding commitments. Since unveiling the second-generation Roadster in 2017, Musk has frequently touted a SpaceX package based on rocket technology that might allow hovering and short jumps.
While some doubts persisted due to engineering and regulatory obstacles, supporters asserted Musk’s qualifications for fulfilling ideas that once appeared improbable, like reusable rockets, commercial spacecraft, and widespread electric vehicle adoption.
Another Ambitious Addition to Musk’s Ventures
The Roadster demonstration adds to Musk’s roster of innovative projects. Through SpaceX, Musk pioneered reusable orbital rockets and expanded the Starlink satellite network. Tesla championed mainstream electric vehicles and software-driven car updates. His companies have also delved into humanoid robots and brain-computer interfaces.
The practicality of the flying Roadster remains uncertain, but the wide range of public interest and responses on social media suggest that the demonstration succeeded in its immediate aim: persuading many viewers they witnessed a glimpse of the future.
