On Saturday, the No Kings network organized rallies across the United States to encourage early voting in the upcoming midterm elections. These events, while nonpartisan, built on the momentum of nearly two years of protests against President Donald Trump’s administration.
A significant gathering took place near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Despite the chilly weather, attendees were entertained by a band, and many danced while holding signs like ‘VOTE EARLY’ and ‘HANDS OFF MY VOTE!’
In Atlanta, City Councilman Michael Julian Bond addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of voting. He compared the power to vote with superhero abilities, asking, ‘Why would you give up your right, your power, your obligation to vote? Be a superhero, use your power. Go to the polls and vote.’
A similar demonstration occurred in Manhattan, New York City, marking a coordinated nationwide day of action focused on early voting.
President Trump has expressed skepticism about mail voting, alleging without evidence that voter fraud affected the 2020 presidential election results. Recently, his administration filed a lawsuit against California election officials, seeking to prevent the counting of mail-in ballots from those federally identified as ‘likely’ noncitizens until their immigration status is confirmed.
The Justice Department has also warned local officials against processing ballots from suspected noncitizens, suggesting a risk of criminal investigation. In response, Senators Alex Padilla, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Dick Durbin urged the Attorney General to refrain from interfering with election materials before the midterms are certified.
