Morgan Park’s Travezz Jones Sparks Comeback Victory

Morgan Park senior Travezz Jones excels at finding open space and has perfect timing on the football field. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound wide receiver played a crucial role in reviving his team’s energy during the city championship game at Lane Stadium in Chicago. After scoring a touchdown and a 2-point conversion, he helped lead the Mustangs to a 24-14 comeback win against Kenwood.

Junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. showcased his skills with 14 completions out of 21 attempts, gaining 181 yards and throwing three touchdowns for Morgan Park, which now has an 8-1 record. The team had previously claimed the Public League Red Star title. Another key player, junior wide receiver Jaxon Bland, also contributed with a touchdown catch and a 2-point conversion.

Kenwood’s Broncos, standing at a 6-3 record, displayed their strength with junior quarterback Malachi Henigan connecting a 78-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Lawrence Carr. Henigan also completed a four-yard touchdown run.

“I’ve had him all four years, and he’s really come of age,” Morgan Park coach Chris James said. “When we needed him the most, he stepped up and made plays.”

Jones’ performance was vital in overcoming Kenwood’s 14-8 halftime lead. His remarkable 27-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter shifted momentum in Morgan Park’s favor. “They made a mistake with no safety over the top,” said Smith of the play strategy. The connection between Smith and Jones proved crucial, built on mutual understanding and trust.

Jones added confusion to Kenwood’s defense with his agility and speed. “My game is fast and physical,” Jones remarked, expressing how his style intensified the competitiveness on the field.

Jones continued to impress with a key 23-yard catch on third-and-19, paving the way for Bland’s decisive touchdown in the fourth quarter. “The game is about confidence,” explained Jones, stating how his initial score bolstered his performance.

Known for creating mismatches, Jones moves fluidly across the field. Although he possesses the quickness needed for the outside, his slot receiver role maximizes his potential, demonstrated by his key touchdown. His route running ability, tracking of the ball, and excellent hands highlight his strengths.

Jones, now a focal point in the offense, acknowledges the increased significance of his role. He aspires to maintain Morgan Park’s tradition of producing skilled college receivers, with a scholarship offer from Western Illinois.

Inspired by his older cousins, Jones cultivated his talent at an early age. “I think I recognized ever since I was a kid that I had talent,” Jones shared, recalling childhood influences that fostered his passion for football.

The seamless connection between Jones, Smith, and Bland translates into an effective coordination on the field. “That competitive part, I think, is just something I was born with,” Jones said confidently, reaffirming his natural affinity for football.
