Georgia Upset by Auburn in Shock Loss: Consecutive Defeats for Top Teams

Being ranked No. 1 in college football may not always be advantageous. Recently, Georgia experienced a stunning defeat to the unranked Auburn Tigers, marking a noteworthy event not seen since 1990. The top-ranked teams lost to unranked opponents in back-to-back weeks following Georgia’s narrow 27-24 loss at home.

Georgia was on a 53-game winning streak against unranked teams before this defeat. During the game at Sanford Stadium on October 17, 2026, Chas Nimrod of Auburn celebrated a touchdown, capturing a key moment of the game. Initially, Georgia seemed dominant, building a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. However, their offense struggled thereafter, failing to score in five consecutive drives, punctuated by three punts, a missed field goal, and an interception.

Auburn capitalized on these opportunities, scoring 24 unanswered points, placing Georgia’s lead at risk. Entering the fourth quarter, Georgia was down by 10 points. An early field goal initiated a comeback, and Georgia managed to force Auburn into two punts. Subsequently, they orchestrated a 13-play, 94-yard drive to tie the game.

Yet, a crucial turning point occurred when Gunnar Stockton fumbled the ball soon after Georgia regained possession. Auburn exploited this turnover, starting from their own 44-yard line with less than a minute remaining. A subsequent roughing the passer penalty helped them edge closer, allowing Alex McPherson to convert a decisive 34-yard field goal, securing the victory.

The aftermath saw Georgia’s ranking questioned, similar to Texas’s fall to No. 7 after their defeat to Oklahoma. This loss marked Georgia’s first home defeat against an unranked opponent since 2019 under coach Kirby Smart’s leadership.

Georgia now stands at 5-1, having claimed the No. 1 position after beating Alabama. Opportunities for teams like Notre Dame, Miami, and Ohio State arise as the top rank becomes contested.

Georgia will regroup next week before facing Florida, who recently upset Texas. Auburn will host LSU, currently ranked No. 22, in their upcoming game.
