North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently appeared in photographs released by state media, following unfounded online claims that he had died from a brain hemorrhage or fallen into a coma. The images were published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and the Rodong Sinmun newspaper. They show Kim visiting a clothing and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang on October 19, with his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, and other officials.
The pictures emerged after a Chinese dissident in the United States claimed on social media that Kim had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage, been taken to Beijing for treatment, and later died. These claims spread on social media and were reported by some international tabloids, despite a lack of independent verification. The regime appears to present Kim as continuing his public duties; however, the event has not been verified independently.
Origin of the Rumors
The rumors were reportedly started by Wanjun Xie, who claims to be the chairman of the Chinese Democratic Party, an organization banned in China. On social media, Xie stated that Kim suffered a brain hemorrhage, lost consciousness, and was transferred to a Beijing hospital for emergency treatment due to inadequate medical facilities in North Korea. Xie alleged that Kim had died and his body was secretly returned to North Korea, but no verifiable evidence supports these claims.
Xie has a history of circulating unverified claims, including speculation about Chinese President Xi Jinping’s health. The recent rumors spurred more speculation about North Korea’s leadership, though no evidence supports these claims.
Kim’s Recent Public Appearances
Kim Jong Un’s latest appearance follows a series of public activities reported by North Korean media in recent months. South Korea’s Ministry of Unification tracks Kim’s publicly reported activities, which include political meetings, military events, and public ceremonies. Records show multiple appearances by Kim in August and September. On September 22, he reportedly attended a football match and his appearance was reported by state media two days later.
The reported visit to the exhibition on October 19 adds to these activities, although South Korea has not confirmed it yet.
History of Health Rumors
The latest rumors mirror previous incidents where speculation about Kim’s health circulated internationally. In 2020, his absence from public life for weeks led to speculation about his health, but he later appeared at a public event, disproving those rumors. Concerns about his health persist due to his weight and smoking habits, which contribute to worries about his cardiovascular health.
Kim’s health is significant because any sudden change in leadership could affect regional security. Kim has led North Korea since 2011 after succeeding his father, Kim Jong Il. The leadership has been within the Kim family for three generations, but the line of succession after Kim Jong Un is less certain.
Focus on Kim’s Daughter
Increased attention has been given to Kim Ju Ae, his daughter, who has appeared with him at political and military events since late 2022. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service suggests Kim may groom her for leadership. Her visibility has fueled speculation about succession, but she has not been officially named as his successor.
Her young age and the country’s male-dominated political system add uncertainty to her potential succession.
A sudden leadership crisis could destabilize North Korea’s political system, affecting control over nuclear weapons and sparking potential internal struggles. The impact would extend beyond the Korean Peninsula, potentially affecting China and the United States, which has 28,500 troops in South Korea.
Tensions Between North and South Korea
The recent photographs coincide with renewed tensions between North Korea and South Korea. On October 19, Kim Yo Jong, Kim’s sister, warned about the unstable situation along the southern border. She accused South Korean forces of reckless behavior following a dispute over a land mine explosion that injured two South Korean soldiers. North Korea has denied involvement, while South Korea claims that mines planted by North Korea caused the incident.
Kim Yo Jong also mentioned reviewing the possibility of resuming loudspeaker broadcasts along the border, which could escalate tensions further.
