Munster Town Council Member Chuck Gardiner Resigns

The Munster Town Council is experiencing a leadership change with the resignation of Councilman Chuck Gardiner, a representative of District 3. Gardiner announced his departure at the council meeting on Monday night, concluding his 6 ½-year tenure as councilman and Redevelopment Commission member. His resignation takes effect on Tuesday, October 20.

Gardiner was also serving as the Council Vice President for 2026. In his resignation letter, he expressed admiration for Munster’s community spirit and gratitude for the support he received. He praised the professionalism of town employees and the strength of the community in overcoming significant challenges such as the 2020 pandemic and the 2026 EF1 tornado.

While Gardiner didn’t specify reasons in his letter for stepping down, he later conveyed to the Post-Tribune his frustration with political discord within the council. Gardiner mentioned feeling burned out and reluctance to face another campaign.

The process for selecting Gardiner’s replacement involves him submitting his resignation to the Lake County Clerk’s office. According to Lake County Republican Party Chairman Randy Niemeyer, the party will then have 30 days to organize a caucus to elect a new council member.

Council President Joe Hofferth acknowledged Gardiner’s contributions, labeling him a dedicated and diligent vice president. Councilmen Dave Nellans and Jonathan Petersen also expressed their gratitude for Gardiner’s service. Councilman George Shinkan noted the constructive influence Gardiner had on the council.

Shinkan indirectly addressed tensions, warning against divisive behavior in a social media post without naming anyone specifically. He emphasized putting the interests of Munster first over personal agendas.

The council has seen several resignations since 2024, including those of longtime attorneys Nicole Bennett and David Westland, who cited harassment by Petersen. James Marino left his position as Town Manager last year, succeeded by Tricia Abbott. This wave of resignations began with Dustin Anderson and Jill DiTommaso stepping down in February 2024.
