President Donald Trump is actively traveling across the country to bolster conservative support as the midterm elections approach. His schedule includes a visit to Texas on October 27. He aims to assist Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in a challenging race, considered highly competitive by some Democrats. Despite Trump’s rallies, there’s debate on their influence on key races.
James Talarico, a Democrat and Texas state representative, is contesting to become the first Democrat to win a state position since 1994. Though Talarico leads slightly in most polls, the gap is narrow. Paxton, despite past controversies such as his impeachment and acquittal and past securities fraud charges, faces a tight race for the critical seat.
GOP strategists express concerns that Trump’s involvement might negatively impact their candidates, as his approval ratings decline. Voter dissatisfaction with issues like gas prices and living costs is evident. However, in Texas, a traditionally Republican-leaning state, Trump’s appearances, including a significant convention in Dallas, have not noticeably harmed Paxton. Recent polls indicate the race is closing.
Nick Maddux, a senior advisor for Paxton, stated the campaign focuses on maintaining their majority. “AG Paxton appreciates the support and understands the importance of Texas in keeping the majority. He is actively engaging with Texans, raising funds, and communicating his message,” Maddux said.
Impact of Trump’s Rallies on Texas Senate Polls
Comparative polls conducted post-Dallas convention and San Antonio rally indicate a tightened race. These changes could be due both to Trump’s presence and significant late advertising efforts. Trump asserts his rallies have reshaped the race dynamics, citing Paxton’s slight lead as proof.
Various surveys show slight movement in the race. Data from Marist and InsiderAdvantage reflected Talarico’s lead shrinking post-rally. However, Trafalgar Group indicated a slight increase in Talarico’s lead. On average, the polls display a shift of approximately 2.4 points towards Paxton.
Significance of the Texas Senate Race in 2026
The Texas Senate race is crucial, as Democrats aim to break the longstanding Republican hold, last broken by Lloyd Bentsen’s win in 1988. Taking control depends on the Democrats retaining all seats and flipping four GOP seats.
Paxton emerged as the Republican candidate after defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn. Trump supported Paxton over Cornyn, despite concerns from Cornyn and others that a Democrat might win if Paxton was nominated. This race is seen as a toss-up by forecasters, including The Cook Political Report.
Early voting continues until October 30, with Election Day set for November 3.
Upcoming Trump Rallies in Texas
The Republican National Committee announced Trump’s events in Lubbock and Waco, cities where he enjoys solid support. These rallies aim to encourage voter turnout among his base. However, Paxton indicated the Dallas convention negatively affected GOP candidates, dismissing past support.
Despite Paxton’s remarks on fundraising calls, his advisor, Maddux, labeled criticisms as unfounded, referencing internal polls showing Paxton’s advantage.
Campaign Dynamics: Talarico vs. Paxton
Financially, Talarico’s campaign has a significant edge. He reported raising $64 million in the third quarter, setting Senate records previously held by Democrat Jaime Harrison in 2020. A substantial portion of donations are small contributions under $100.
Paxton’s campaign and supporting committees raised $18 million combined during the same period. The financial disparity extends to suburban contributions, traditionally key for Republican victories.
Notably, external groups aligned with Republicans have invested over $175 million to support Paxton. Elon Musk has notably contributed, targeting Talarico through super PACs. Talarico criticizes Musk’s financial influence as an attempt to manipulate the electoral outcome.
As the campaign continues, Trump has shifted the blame for potential failures to other Republican figures, notably targeting John Cornyn. This tension underscores the stakes and complexities surrounding the upcoming elections.
