Democratic Candidates Navigate Sanders’ Influence in Texas Politics

As Senator Bernie Sanders held a rally in Houston for his ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ tour, prominent Texas Democrats were absent. James Talarico, a Democratic Senate candidate, and Gina Hinojosa, the gubernatorial nominee, chose not to attend. Both aim to appeal to a broader electorate, needing support from independents and Republicans in a state where democratic socialism is not widely embraced.

Polling supports this strategic absence. A June 2026 University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll showed that democratic socialism had a favorable view from 29 percent of Texans, leaving it 17 points underwater.

“Any effort by Bernie Sanders is likely to be more of a negative than a positive for Texas Democrats,” said Mark Jones, a political scientist at Rice University. “They don’t really need to worry about enthusiasm. Donald Trump does that all on his own in terms of motivating Democrats to turn out.”

Sanders’ presence creates opportunities for Republicans to paint Texas Democrats as too left-leaning. The visit aligned with ongoing attempts by Republicans to link Democrats with Sanders-style socialism, especially concerning affordability issues.

Republicans utilized Sanders’ visit by releasing statements and linking Hinojosa to what they deemed a high-tax record. Vice President JD Vance criticized Talarico, suggesting his policies contradicted the moderate image he is attempting to portray.

Despite the polarized opinions, early voting turnout showed high participation from both Democratic and Republican strongholds. Urban centers like Harris and Dallas Counties reported record numbers on the first day of early voting, indicative of strong engagement on both sides.

Former Congressman Beto O’Rourke embraced the challenge, reaffirming a sense of unity and strength among Texas Democrats. Sanders’ rally focused on broader themes of economic inequality, healthcare, and political influence.

Polling for Texas elections shows Greg Abbott leading Hinojosa narrowly, maintaining a consistent lead in most surveys. Talarico has a slight edge over his opponent, Ken Paxton, but many results are within the margin of error.

As early voting continues through October 30, both parties await final voter turnout and results.
