NFL and NFLPA Dispute Over Jalen Hurts’ Medical Care

The NFL recently addressed the care of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts regarding his blood clots during its fall league meeting. Officials expressed satisfaction with the Eagles’ approach and criticized reports that reached incorrect conclusions about the situation.

The NFL’s commentary came amid contrasting statements from the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). The union released a statement criticizing the league for drawing conclusions and noted that the NFL had informed them it would not review how Hurts’ care was managed.

Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s chief medical officer, expressed confidence in the Eagles medical staff, characterizing their actions as conservative and patient-focused. Sills highlighted that cases like Hurts’—deep vein thrombosis—are typically low in number throughout a decade and emphasized the thorough review process for each case.

Sills further explained that in Hurts’ case, the medical personnel acted quickly and employed advanced imaging techniques to diagnose and manage the condition effectively. He reassured that decision-making and testing were conducted with an abundance of caution.

Adding to the league’s defense, Jeff Miller, the NFL’s executive vice president of communications, shared that the league relied on records from the Eagles staff and consulted with independent hospitals and doctors to understand the events surrounding Hurts’ medical care.

Miller’s comments seemed to provide a robust defense of the Eagles and their medical staff until the NFLPA released a statement challenging the league’s assessment.

The NFLPA stated they were unaware of any investigation into Hurts’ care by the NFL and recalled that the league had indicated no plans to review the treatments Hurts received. This contradicts the NFL’s claims of confidence in the medical care provided.

Furthermore, the NFLPA called for a full investigation, emphasizing that understanding the facts is crucial for ensuring players receive top-notch care in future scenarios. The union’s stance implies that the NFL’s confidence may lack a thorough factual basis.
