Pentagon Updates Casualty Count in War with Iran

The Pentagon has increased its official count of U.S. military deaths related to the conflict with Iran to 23, following the addition of two Air Force fatalities. These deaths are noted as nonhostile. The Air Force reported one death due to illness, while the cause of death for the second airman remains under investigation.

Nonhostile Deaths Outnumber Combat Fatalities

The latest data shows that more than half of the 23 deaths in the conflict were nonhostile. To date, 11 service members died from enemy action, whereas 12 were nonhostile. The recent update reflects this shift in the casualty numbers.

Alongside the fatalities, 865 U.S. service members have sustained injuries from enemy fire since the war began in late February, as per the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS).

Operation Epic Fury and Overseas Operations

DCAS acts as the official record for U.S. troop casualties in wars and other operations. It categorizes casualties into two distinct phases of the conflict.

The first phase, Operation Epic Fury, started with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28. It accounts for 15 fatalities and 417 wounded troops.

The second category, known as “Overseas Operations,” has recorded eight deaths and 448 injuries since July 7. The two newly added Air Force deaths belong to this category.

A significant incident occurred in March, when a U.S. military refueling tanker crashed in Iraq, causing six nonhostile fatalities. Such events contribute to the broader classification of nonhostile deaths during military operations.

Continued Toll on U.S. Forces

The disclosed deaths highlight the broader impacts of the conflict on U.S. military personnel. More than half of those injured were harmed during attacks that followed the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, amidst retaliatory strikes.

The Pentagon’s records show 417 injuries during the initial phase, with an additional 448 wounds recorded under Overseas Operations post-July 7.

Investigation of Airman’s Death Ongoing

The circumstances surrounding the second airman’s death remain under investigation, despite its classification as nonhostile. The Air Force has withheld further details about these service members.

While the latest updates affect the death count, they do not alter the wounded figures. Two more nonhostile deaths have been added to the Pentagon’s reported casualties.

Currently, the Pentagon discloses a total of 23 military deaths and 865 wounded service members due to the Iran conflict.
