Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola recently addressed claims about an alleged scheme involving candidates with similar names running against her opponent. In a speech to her supporters in Juneau, Peltola stated firmly, “I knew nothing about any other candidates on the ballot except for me and the incumbent. That is all I have ever known about. I am not interested in tricking voters. I know I can beat Dan Sullivan.”
In a counter interview with Fox News, incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan strongly accused Peltola’s campaign of electoral misconduct. Sullivan described the actions taken by Peltola’s team as highly corrupt and deceitful. According to Sullivan, when candidates typically enter an election, they focus on their record and vision. However, he alleged Peltola’s advisors, comprising Democrats from D.C. and Alaska, prioritized manipulating the election to deceive voters.
Sen. Dan Sullivan remarked, “Heck, Peltola is still lying about it, right?”
The controversy surrounding this election involves two individuals named Dan Sullivan on the ballot. The New York Times reported an alleged plan by Peltola’s campaign with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to confuse voters by introducing another Dan Sullivan. This strategy aimed to divert support from the incumbent Republican senator, Dan S. Sullivan.
The Justice Department has intervened, delaying the certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate election results due to the presence of both candidates named Dan Sullivan on the ballot. The incumbent senator appears as “Sullivan, Dan S.”, while “Sullivan, Daniel J. Jr.”, a retired schoolteacher known as “Decoy Dan”, is also listed, raising concerns about potential voter confusion.
Sen. Sullivan expressed his concerns in conversation with Fox News correspondent Matt Finn, emphasizing the disdain he believes the alleged scheme shows toward Alaskan voters. Sullivan considered this act as an attempt to rig the election, labeling it the biggest scandal in Alaska’s electoral history.
Concluding his remarks, Sen. Sullivan voiced confidence in overcoming this hurdle, asserting, “Mary Peltola and her campaign and the Democrats in D.C. and Alaska think the Alaskan people are dumb. We’re not dumb. And this is going to have a huge impact on the election. We’re going to win.”
