Los Angeles Mayoral Race: Bass vs. Raman

The Los Angeles mayoral race took an unexpected turn when Councilmember Nithya Raman entered the race against incumbent Karen Bass in February. Raman, known for her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America, surprised many with her last-minute challenge. The race between Bass and Raman has been intense, with both candidates attacking each other’s weaknesses.

Close Contest and Voter Dilemmas

According to the latest Berkeley IGS/L.A. Times poll, the race is tight, with a significant portion of voters still undecided. Dan Schnur, a political communications professor, noted that undecided voters are considering whether to maintain the current leadership or take a chance on a less known candidate who promises potential change.

The question that the race comes down to, especially for undecided voters, is whether to stick with an unsatisfying status quo, or take the risk with a relatively unknown quantity who could make things better or worse.

Bass and Raman, once allies, have turned into fierce competitors. Their campaigns have focused on highlighting each other’s failings through advertisements and press conferences. Raman criticizes Bass’ handling of crises like the Palisades fire and the homelessness situation, while Bass points to Raman’s shifting political stances.

Challenges Ahead for the Next Mayor

The winner of the election will oversee Los Angeles as it prepares for the 2028 Summer Olympics. This event poses financial and security risks. Additionally, the city’s rising homelessness numbers, upcoming union contract negotiations, and strained budget will be immediate concerns for the new mayor.

Background and Campaign Dynamics

The race officially began in July 2024 when Bass announced her reelection bid. Her initial popularity decreased following the Palisades fire. Despite her quick return to LA, criticism grew over her decision to leave for a diplomatic event in Ghana during the crisis. Raman used these incidents to criticize Bass, suggesting city mismanagement and inefficiency.

Other candidates, such as Spencer Pratt and Austin Beutner, joined the race, though Pratt gained some attention without reaching the runoff stage. Raman attacked Bass on issues including police funding and city contracts, painting Bass as part of a political machine. Bass defended her policies as necessary and beneficial for the city.

Different Positions and Allegiances

Bass lost some voter support after the aftermath of emergencies like the Boyle Heights warehouse fire. Meanwhile, Raman highlighted successes in her district, showcasing a reduction in homelessness. Other political figures, like County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, shifted their support to Raman based on her achievements.

Raman’s campaign faced scrutiny for indecisive statements and campaign missteps, which Bass used to question Raman’s capabilities and clarity on important issues. Both candidates are working hard to secure support from undecided voters, including those who initially supported Pratt.

The race is poised to conclude, with the outcome potentially shaping the city’s future amidst its challenges and the global spotlight of the upcoming Olympics.
