Sen. Susan Collins Responds to Allegations of Misleading Attack Ads in Tight Senate Race

Senator Susan Collins accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Party of launching misleading attack ads against her and other Republican candidates. She expressed this view during an interview with Fox News, in the lead-up to the Maine election where she is contesting a closely watched race against Democratic opponent Troy Jackson. According to the latest Fox News poll, Collins and Jackson are neck and neck at 49% each.

Collins highlighted that the negative ads were not unique to her campaign. She noticed similarities with ads targeting her Republican colleagues. “One outrageous ad linked me to Jeffrey Epstein, a claim which is completely false. I found that similar ads were used against Republican candidates in similar tight races,” Collins stated. She emphasized the ads followed what she termed “Chuck Schumer’s playbook.”

She expressed concern that Democratic strategies shifted focus away from local issues, aiming to frame the race as a national political battle. “My opponent, Chuck Schumer, and their allies seem determined to nationalize this race,” she remarked.

Reflecting on her campaign, Collins described herself as a bipartisan legislator willing to work across party divides. With a view towards collaboration, she lamented the departure of centrist voices from the Senate and emphasized the importance of bipartisan dialogue. “Many have retired or chosen not to run again,” she said, adding, “We need more people who are willing to work across party lines.”

Collins portrayed herself as the “most independent senator,” noting that her decisions are guided by personal convictions rather than presidential preferences or party lines. Addressing claims about her support for President Trump, she clarified that her so-called alignment with President Trump’s policies is often overstated based on limited data. “The claim that I voted 95% of the time with President Trump is misleading. It focuses on 30% of votes, a more extensive review shows it’s markedly lower, around 72%. Moreover, I opposed certain presidential policies 138 times,” she explained.

Despite a challenging campaign, Collins expressed optimism about her prospects, citing positive responses from communities throughout Maine. Her Democratic opponent, Jackson, suggested he had strong chances, yet Collins remained confident.
