PEOPLE has provided an exclusive look at the new graphic novel adaptation of Harriet the Spy, based on the beloved children’s book by Louise Fitzhugh. Harriet Webster is adapting the story into a graphic novel, with illustrations by Claudia Petrazzi. The novel will be released by Delacorte Press in 2027.
The original Harriet the Spy, published in 1964, follows young Harriet M. Welsch, a budding writer in New York City. Harriet starts documenting her observations about friends and classmates in a notebook. Complications arise when she loses the notebook, forcing her to manage the fallout.
Harriet Webster shared, “Revisiting Harriet the Spy, I appreciate how Louise Fitzhugh revolutionized children’s literature with her protagonist’s profound sense of self.” Fitzhugh’s influence in children’s literature remains significant, as expressed by Webster, who related deeply to the character’s aspirations.
The graphic novel adaptation is part of a legacy of Harriet the Spy adaptations. A 1996 film and a 2021 animated series on Apple TV+ stemmed from the original book. Webster, along with illustrator Claudia Petrazzi, worked collaboratively to bring this new format to life. “Adapting this iconic story into a graphic novel with Claudia and the team has been a thrill and an honor,” Webster added.
This new adaptation promises to engage a new generation of readers, offering a visual dimension to the classic tale. The graphic novel is set for release on April 27, 2027, and is available for preorder at various retailers.
