House Democrat Ilhan Omar achieved a significant electoral win in Minnesota’s 5th congressional district. Her victory comes after Homeland Security Investigations agents raided her Washington, D.C., home on October 12.
Out of 344,118 votes, Omar led her Republican challenger, John Nagel, with 76.5% compared to his 16.2% as of Wednesday morning. This marks a robust public endorsement of Omar following the federal raid related to allegations of immigration document fraud. Omar has denied any wrongdoing, and her attorney claims the investigation is politically motivated.
On Wednesday, Omar had secured 263,166 votes, amounting to 76.5% of the total, with Nagel receiving 55,805 votes, or 16.2%. Independent candidate DeVelle Jackson garnered 24,215 votes, which is 7%. With over 99% of votes counted, the Associated Press declared Omar the winner of Minnesota’s 5th district.
Omar’s performance shows slight improvement compared to past elections. In 2024, she received 74.4% against Republican Dalia al-Aqidi, and in 2022, she secured 74.3% against another Republican. In 2020, Omar won with 64.3%, also contested by the Legal Marijuana Now Party, which won 9.5%.
On X, Omar expressed gratitude to her constituents, stating: “Thank you, Minnesota! I’m incredibly honored to continue to represent you in the People’s House with a resounding mandate. We will not allow Trump to silence us.” Her victory aligns with a “Blue Wave” that resulted in Democrats gaining control of both the Senate and House.
“Today in the Washington D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” said a Department of Justice spokesperson.
The federal investigation targets Omar for potential immigration offenses, including providing false statements and immigration fraud. Omar labeled the raid as an attempt to target political enemies and criticized what she sees as a campaign of intimidation led by Trump.
Her Communications Director, Jacklyn Rogers, criticized the raid as an “outrageous” abuse of power, asserting Omar’s innocence. In response to the raid, President Trump expressed his personal dislike for Omar, describing her as “a terrible person.”
Secretary of Homeland Security, Mark Mullin, stated that federal authorities are reviewing Omar’s immigration status due to unverified allegations that she married her brother to enter the U.S. Omar has consistently denied these accusations.
“There may be more to this, the whole family migrated and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with,” Mullin said.
Earlier this year, Vice President JD Vance mentioned that the Department of Justice was investigating Omar for alleged immigration fraud. This remark came alongside the “Feeding Our Future” scandal in Minnesota, where a non-profit faced accusations of misappropriating $250 million in federal funds.
Omar denied involvement in the scandal, stating to Newsweek: “Any claim I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false.” She condemned the misuse of funds meant for children’s meals and called it reprehensible.
