A Close Look at the Bass vs. Raman Mayoral Debate

Karen Bass and Nithya Raman debated on Tuesday night at an event hosted by NBC4 and Telemundo52 in Universal City. This was the last time the two L.A. mayoral candidates came face to face before the election on November 3.

The Candidates and Their Strategies

Times columnists Lorraine Ali, Gustavo Arellano, and Steve Lopez shared their insights on the debate’s highlights and pitfalls. Arellano noted that Nithya Raman opened with a notable line, asking, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” She aimed this question at viewers, invoking Ronald Reagan despite him not being typically associated with Los Angeles. This query resonated negatively with many L.A. residents.

Previously, Raman communicated hope and change effectively. However, in this debate, Bass placed her on the defensive, limiting her ability to promote new ideas. Bass rarely referred to her notes, whereas Raman did so frequently, which Arellano pointed out might signal insecurity that could concern voters. Bass’s consistent challenges forced Raman into a defensive posture more than once, leading to interruptions and tense exchanges with the moderators.

Despite these challenges, Raman’s responses remained focused and clear. She maintained her lead in most polls, achieving her primary goal of avoiding missteps. Bass needed a decisive victory but managed to win only one significant exchange according to Arellano’s politico friend.

Reflections From the Columnists

Steve Lopez pointed out that while polls favored Raman, undecided voters play a crucial role. He suggested that many voters are unsure because they are not enthused about either candidate. Questions linger about Raman’s ability to form coalitions, given her lack of endorsements from certain council members despite her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America.

Lopez highlighted that while learning from the campaign has value, voters require clarity on Raman’s vision and leadership plans. Bass’s performance suggested that older voter turnout might shore up her chances, although the debate failed to illuminate Raman fully.

Lorraine Ali noted that Bass needed to disrupt Raman’s momentum. Yet, Raman entered the debate slightly ahead, which eased her challenge compared to Bass, who struggled against negative perceptions from her previous term. Ali observed that Bass displayed confidence and control, contrasting with Raman’s reliance on notes. The conversation included significant critiques from both, addressing homeless issues and historical crises.

Factors Affecting the Outcome

The debate’s impact may hinge on how much the electorate engaged with it. Neither Raman nor Bass captured attention with the charisma of other political figures. Ali suspected limited public interest in the event, signaling that the debate might not shift voter opinions significantly.

As the election approaches, voters may continue to weigh candidate personalities and past records. Bass’s poise in the debate gave her a slight edge, according to Ali, but viewership numbers remain uncertain, and whether any gain translates into electoral success is still unknown.
