Hope serves as a driving force, yet it often feels unreachable when faced with grim news. Recently, I felt a renewed sense of hope after attending a national event of the Young Elected Officials Network, a project of People For the American Way Foundation. This initiative backs elected leaders under 40 who aim to nurture communities rooted in freedom, fairness, and opportunity.
The meeting’s theme, “Power in Practice: Governing for a Just Democracy,” resonated deeply. Years ago, as a young city councilman and the youngest mayor in Ithaca, New York, I lacked experience in wielding power. The Young Elected Officials Network offered a crucial support system then, allowing me to learn, share experiences, and grow in my role as a leader entrusted by constituents.
Today, two decades later, I lead People For the American Way Foundation, proud to support this network. At the recent event, seasoned members welcomed newcomers, shared insights, and offered mentorship. Attendees gained wisdom from prominent figures in American public life.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris advised young policymakers to pursue change boldly and beware of gatekeepers isolating them from constituents. Stacey Abrams highlighted storytelling’s role in policy-making and defended compromise as vital to progress.
Bill Nye emphasized investing in science, recalling the Constitution’s emphasis on it. Alyssa Milano spoke on women’s rights post “Me Too,” noting how courage endures despite delayed rewards.
Rep. Lateefah Simon (D-Calif) stressed learning from history to enhance governance rather than limiting actions to speeches or social media critiques. Her successful legislative work as a freshman proves her resolve.
These insights underscored the essence of progressivism: achieving goals that uplift lives. Media focus on political shifts, but success lies in beneficial outcomes.
Young Elected Officials Network aids newcomers to public service, ensuring effective governance and countering corruption that erodes civic engagement.
If despair grips you, turn to young leaders advancing communities nationwide. Their dedication, intellect, compassion, and vigor promise a hopeful future.
