Aaron Rai emerged from a crowded field to achieve a remarkable triumph at the PGA Championship held at Aronimink Golf Club. While notable players like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Xander Schauffele stood ready to claim victory, it was Rai who dominated the course.
Under the heat of the sun, Rai began his impressive performance, making six birdies over the final ten holes. His critical move came with a 70-foot birdie putt on the 17th green, ensuring a win. He completed his round with a 5-under 65, achieving a three-shot victory, making him the first English-born player to secure the PGA Championship in over a century.
‘To be here is outside my wildest imagination,’ Rai stated.
Starting three shots behind, Rai regained ground with a 40-foot eagle putt. His skills shone on the 13th hole, as his bunker shot allowed him a birdie, a stark contrast to McIlroy’s struggle on the same par 4. The final rounds of Rai are notable for six under or better over the last 10 holes, a feat matched by Cameron Smith and Jack Nicklaus in other majors.
Other competitors could not maintain their positions. Even seasoned players like McIlroy saw their hopes fade as Rai surged ahead. Rai’s final score of 9-under 271 placed his name on the Wanamaker Trophy, joining England’s Jim Barnes.
Rahm and Alex Smalley tied for second, both gaining significant career milestones. Rahm had his best finish since joining LIV Golf, while Smalley secured entry into the next four majors. Justin Thomas, leading for much of the day, concluded with a shared fourth position.
The championship set a record with 22 players within four shots of the lead entering the final round. Rai, known for his sportsmanship and humble nature, emerged as a standout in the tournament.
‘You won’t find one person on property who’s not happy for him,’ McIlroy commented, reflecting the respect Rai commands. Rai’s unique habits, like using two gloves and covering his irons, highlight his dedication and roots.
‘What he did today is nothing short of special,’ Rahm noted.
Rai’s victory grants him a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour and entries into prestigious tournaments like the Masters and the British Open. His success at Aronimink is a testament to his skill and perseverance.
