PEORIA — In a stirring display of skill and emotion, senior right-hander Abby Brueggmann proved her mettle in leading Lincoln-Way West to a 2-1 upset victory over Marist in the Class 4A state semifinal held at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. Her success was underscored by the tears she wiped away, emblematic of both relief and validation. Brueggmann shared her doubts about her ability to pitch in high-stakes games but acknowledged that both she and her team were good enough.
Brueggmann’s performance was remarkable. She struck out four and left eight Marist runners stranded, ensuring the Warriors’ path to victory. Her effort was bolstered by Reese Forsythe’s key triple and Reese Rourke’s steal of home. This victory lifted Lincoln-Way West (29-7) into the state championship against Mundelein (23-5).
Marist displayed formidable play despite their loss. Notre Dame recruit Layla Peters, Saint Louis recruit Ellie Holmstrom, and Maddie Rogers each contributed two hits. Soleil Tate, committed to Wisconsin, also struck out six. Yet, Lincoln-Way West capitalized on their opportunities.
Brueggmann expressed immense pride in her team, emphasizing the strong leadership from seniors. She noted the team’s ability to surpass even the top competitors, maintaining that they aimed to secure the championship. In their previous encounter on March 30, Marist had decisively defeated Lincoln-Way West, setting their expectations as favorites for this match.
On the way to Peoria, the Warriors maintained a mindset to play loose and aggressive. The constant scoring threat kept Marist on edge, but Lincoln-Way West’s defense held firm. Marist scored only once in the game despite reaching scoring position in nearly every inning.
The Warriors showcased strategic play, scoring through a double steal by Rourke and Paige Seivert and a triple by Forsythe. Brueggmann’s ability to strike out a Marist player in crucial moments, once with a runner on second and again with a runner on third, demonstrated her commanding presence on the mound.
Forsythe highlighted the strong connection and mutual support between them, assuring Brueggmann of the team’s defensive strength. Lincoln-Way West coach Heather Novak commended Brueggmann’s courage and trust in her teammates, emphasizing her growth and resilience.
Over four years, Brueggmann has faced challenging lineups, with Marist being particularly tough. Her trust in herself and her teammates has been crucial. Novak praised the team’s defensive prowess throughout postseason close games, making it a rewarding spectacle for all.
