Democratic Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed defended his previous contentious remarks about Fourth of July fireworks during a radio interview. On “The Breakfast Club,” host Charlamagne tha God questioned El-Sayed about his past support for defunding the police and his criticisms of Independence Day firework celebrations.
El-Sayed responded to the criticism, expressing his viewpoint on fireworks. He emphasized that America’s identity shouldn’t be solely tied to fireworks. He explained, “If your conception of America is just fireworks, that’s incomplete.” He highlighted environmental concerns, stating, “Every time we do a fireworks show, it destroys air quality and exacerbates asthma and heart conditions.” He clarified he wasn’t advocating against fireworks entirely but suggested alternative expressions of patriotism.
This follows a CNN report revealing El-Sayed deleted around 100 YouTube videos before his Senate campaign, including content criticizing fireworks due to their impact on air quality and potential risks to children and pets.
“Please find another way to celebrate the Fourth of July besides using fireworks,” his past plea reflected.
Republican candidate Mike Rogers criticized El-Sayed during an appearance on “Hannity,” calling attention to the deleted posts. Rogers accused El-Sayed of harboring views unaligned with many Michiganders.
In a statement, Rogers commented, “These are strong views he held, but he knew he had to delete them. If people really understood his stance, they wouldn’t support him.” Fox News Digital reached out for comments from both campaigns but did not receive immediate responses.
