On Friday, Chad Tracy, the interim manager of the Boston Red Sox, shared significant news about the team’s latest acquisition. Adley Rutschman, who joined from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, is set to start his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday as he recovers from left wrist discomfort.
This marks Rutschman’s first game action since July 18. Scheduled to catch for five innings, he will also aim for at least two at-bats. The Worcester Red Sox eagerly announced Rutschman’s appearance on their social media, hoping to draw interest in the three-time All-Star’s return.
While the Red Sox’s offense has been performing well, averaging six runs per game during an 18-3 run since July 17, they are eager for Rutschman’s return. Current catchers Connor Wong and Jake Rogers have struggled offensively, with below-average OPS+ scores.
Rutschman offers a promising boost to the lineup. Despite time on the injured list, he has achieved a .251 batting average, with an on-base percentage of .331 and a slugging percentage of .433, resulting in an OPS+ of 115.
The Red Sox see Rutschman not just as offensive support but as a defensive upgrade too. Adding a player of his caliber strengthens both the lineup and overall team performance.
