Warnings from experts about the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) are shaping the agenda for upcoming talks between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. These discussions will focus on AI safeguards and regulations, becoming a priority due to competition and mutual distrust between the United States and China.
President Trump has previously dismissed AI’s existential threats, aligning with China’s general stance. However, recent calls from the U.S. tech industry urging caution have increased the need for cooperation. Trump noted that AI would be a topic of discussion when he meets Xi in Washington, D.C.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed willingness to address shared AI risks in talks with Beijing. China’s top spy chief has also highlighted potential threats AI poses to the Chinese Communist Party’s power.
“We’re at a point where both the United States and China appear to agree on some of the risks posed by AI,” said Alison Szalwinski, senior vice president at The Asia Group.
Despite consensus on potential risks, managing these risks remains contentious, with significant disagreements over AI governance. Expectations for breakthroughs on broader issues like trade and technology transfers during the Trump-Xi meeting are low. Their previous summit in Beijing was criticized as lacking substance.
Alongside this diplomatic backdrop, AI continues to impact various sectors. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy assured the public of human oversight in a new AI tool for air traffic control. Meanwhile, AI-driven ads are prevalent in political campaigns, despite criticism and warnings from the tech community.
Recently, former President Obama criticized Trump’s AI policy, advocating for federal regulation amidst warnings of its potential threat.
As discussions advance, the U.S. suggests setting up an AI notification system with China. This system aims to facilitate communication in case of AI-triggered national security incidents.
In the political arena, AI’s influence is evident, with campaign strategies leveraging AI technology. The evolving AI landscape continues to present both opportunities and challenges for nations navigating this complex frontier.
