Daniel Kokotajlo, a former researcher at OpenAI, has sounded the alarm on the speed of artificial intelligence development, citing the risk of human extinction. Having worked at OpenAI for two years before his resignation in 2024, Kokotajlo highlights the lack of rigorous safety measures. He supports third-party assessment for tech giants to ensure safer AI advancements.
The debate over the pace of AI growth heated up after Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, penned an essay calling for slower advancements in AI technology. Amodei stressed that the rapid progress might surpass human control capabilities. He advocated for a slowdown in enhancing AI model capabilities, using the gained time wisely.
Dario Amodei’s essay received support from prominent figures like Elon Musk, founder of xAI and CEO of SpaceX, as well as Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
Kokotajlo responded to Amodei’s concerns on ‘Fox News Live,’ suggesting that relying on voluntary industry actions might not suffice. He warned that AI systems could eventually ignore human commands, leading to catastrophic outcomes.
Former White House AI advisor David Sacks opposed the alarming narratives around AI, stating that they’re crafted to push for a government-centric approach to AI regulation. He dismissed claims that foreign actors or NGOs are manipulating these warnings.
Despite agreeing with Amodei’s cautionary stance, Kokotajlo urged for more significant measures, suggesting that private companies’ efforts might fall short. He called for more comprehensive regulatory frameworks to address the potential risks.
Concerns from political figures have also emerged. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna proposed that Congress convene a special session to discuss AI’s future in the U.S. She likened advanced AI to a ‘massive, uncontrolled superweapon’ and advocated for treating it with the same seriousness as nuclear weapons.
Luna emphasized the importance of installing a ‘kill switch’ to ensure AI systems remain under control. While she believes safeguards are crucial, she also stressed the need not to fall behind international competitors in AI development.
Ultimately, Luna expressed the importance of ensuring AI reflects American values rather than those of another country, highlighting the geopolitical stakes tied to AI dominance.
