The Alabama Crimson Tide, under Coach Kalen DeBoer, reached the College Football Playoff in his second season. However, they face significant challenges to make a return in 2026. The team must find a replacement for quarterback Ty Simpson, who was a first-round NFL draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams. Keelon Russell and Austin Mack are in line to compete for the starting position.
Offensive improvements are crucial, especially in the running game. The team suffered a setback when they lost the prospect Hollywood Smothers to Texas, despite their efforts in recruitment. Meanwhile, teams like Texas, LSU, and Georgia are heavily investing in their rosters, increasing competition.
“We’ve got to continue to grow,” DeBoer stated in a recent interview with Garry L. Harris of WVUA 23. “There’s no question. We’ve got to continue to adjust to the times. We’ve got to continue to push the envelope. We need the support of anyone that wants to be a part of it.”
DeBoer stressed the importance of support, including NIL contributions, to attract elite players who make game-changing plays. In April, DeBoer secured a seven-year contract extension valued at $87.7 million, boasting a record of 20-8 over two seasons.
Recruiting for the 2027 class has begun on a rocky note, with Alabama ranked No. 71 by 247 Sports. Yet, DeBoer remains optimistic about Alabama’s competitive edge in the SEC.
“I think we’re very competitive, and that’s what I ask,” DeBoer said. “The investment we make in each scholarship player is unmatched by other programs.”
Despite these challenges, Alabama aims to remain competitive. Achieving the level of dominance once seen under Nick Saban requires equaling the NIL funding efforts of SEC and Big Ten rivals.
