Albert Pujols’ Path to MLB Managerial Role

Albert Pujols, a retired baseball star, is looking to take on a managerial role in Major League Baseball (MLB). His journey has included interviews with teams like the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres, but neither of these opportunities materialized. Instead, he managed the Dominican Republic team in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, which ultimately lost to the United States. Additionally, Pujols serves as the president of baseball operations for Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League. In 2025, he led Leones del Escogido to a league championship in his inaugural year as a professional manager.

Pujols’ Potential with the New York Mets

The New York Mets recently dismissed their manager Carlos Mendoza due to a disappointing season. Pujols expressed interest in the position and has a strong connection with Mets star Juan Soto, fueling speculation about his potential candidacy. Currently, Andy Green is serving as the interim manager while the team searches for a permanent leader. David Stearns, the president of baseball operations, has the task of finding the right fit for the team, and Pujols, at 46, could be a strong contender.

Some believe Pujols could connect well with the Mets compared to his previous suitors. Mike Cameron, a former MLB outfielder, suggested that Pujols might have been viewed as a distraction for the Padres, who sought a manager with a more understated presence and more experience. The then-uncertain ownership situation of the Padres, following the sale of majority shares, also played a role. In contrast, the Mets, under owner Steve Cohen’s leadership, boast the sport’s largest payroll, and the expensive contract of Juan Soto adds pressure and expectations.

Former coach Eric Chavez emphasized the importance of a manager with a commanding presence. He noted, “If your best players are Juan Soto and (Francisco) Lindor, you need a strong personality, a leader who can command respect.” Pujols stands out as a candidate familiar with navigating such expectations.

The Angels and Alternative Choices

After Ron Washington’s option was declined by the Angels for 2026, Pujols was among the first candidates interviewed for the managerial role. Contract length issues reportedly played a role, leading to Kurt Suzuki accepting a one-year deal. With the Angels struggling in the American League West, Pujols’ decision to decline was seen as wise. The Mets, despite also being in last place, have the talent and financial resources to improve in future seasons.

Eric Chavez remains puzzled as to why the interim role did not go to Carlos Beltran, who was once poised to manage the Mets before his involvement in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal impacted his career. Like Pujols, Beltran offers many leadership qualities. However, with more managerial experience and success in the Dominican Republic, Pujols may bring the fresh perspective needed.

The Mets have potential and room for growth, and Pujols offers the credentials to potentially guide them upward.
