During court testimony, a witness named Phil Barber addressed claims about the accessibility of affordable lodging near the Charleston County Courthouse. Barber pointed out that there are nine budget hotels in Mount Pleasant, a 15-minute drive from the courthouse. He also discussed parking availability and mentioned that while hotel prices increase over the weekend, they do not affect weekday court proceedings.
A South Carolina judge, Debra McCaslin, has granted a request by Alex Murdaugh to relocate his double-murder retrial. The trial will now be held in Sumter County. Defense attorneys argued that the jury pool in Colleton County was compromised due to extensive media coverage of the original trial.
The decision stated that Sumter County offers sufficient security, courtroom facilities, and the necessary technology to conduct the trial.
Murdaugh’s defense had initially suggested Charleston or Richland County as possible venues. However, Judge McCaslin considered several factors before making her decision. These included the financial impact on Colleton County, convenience for witnesses, and security both for Murdaugh and the courthouse.
The change in venue follows the South Carolina Supreme Court’s decision to grant Murdaugh a retrial. This came after it was found that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors during his 2023 trial.
The court recognized these actions violated Murdaugh’s right to a fair trial, leading to the overturning of his 2023 convictions and two life sentences. Murdaugh is facing charges for the June 2021 shooting deaths of his wife, Maggie, and his 22-year-old son, Paul.
At his 2023 trial, Murdaugh admitted to providing false information to investigators regarding his whereabouts just before the shootings. However, he has consistently denied any involvement in their deaths.
