Algeria Advances Closer to World Cup Knockout Stage With Win Over Jordan

Algeria is on the verge of reaching the knockout round of the World Cup with a victory over Austria on Saturday. On June 22, 2026, at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Amine Gouiri, Algeria’s No. 9, celebrated his team’s second goal as they faced Jordan in a Group J match.

Algeria overcame an early setback to defeat Jordan 2-1 by scoring from two corner kicks in the second half. This win significantly improved their chances of moving forward in the tournament. Nadhir Benbouali came off the bench to head a corner kick into the net in the 69th minute, followed by Amine Gouiri who secured the victory in the 82nd minute. This was Algeria’s first World Cup win since 2014.

Jordan, making its World Cup debut, initially led with a first-half goal by Nizar Al Rashdan, marking their first lead in the World Cup. However, they could not handle Algeria’s relentless second-half pressure. The triumph for Algeria was historic as they had never won a World Cup match after conceding the first goal, previously recording seven losses and two draws in such situations.

Having lost 3-0 to Argentina in their opening game, Algeria now looks to finish second in Group J and secure a spot in the knockout stage with a win against Austria. Jordan, following a second consecutive defeat, is eliminated from the knockout rounds. They initially lost 3-1 to Austria but fought hard in their inaugural World Cup outing.

The game shifted when Benbouali scored the equalizer, connecting with Riyad Mahrez’s corner kick to send a header into the corner past Yazeed Abulaila. The Algerian team maintained their pressure, and Gouiri’s decisive touch led to a goal that deflected off Abulaila, sparking celebrations among the Algerian supporters at Levi’s Stadium.
