Alimber Santa experienced immense pressure during his Major League debut, facing the challenge of a no-hitter in progress. The Houston Astros pitcher made a significant entrance during the team’s 9-0 victory over the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.
Pitcher Tatsuya Imai started strong with six no-hit innings, and reliever Steven Okert followed with one perfect inning. Manager Joe Espada then called on Santa to complete the remarkable feat.
Santa, 23, delivered two flawless innings, finishing with a strikeout against Brandon Nimmo, marking his first career strikeout. This achievement placed Santa in the history books as the only pitcher since 1900 to be part of a no-hitter during a big league debut, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
“There was some adrenaline,” Santa explained through a translator. “I was aware of the no-hitter, trying to calm myself from the bullpen.”
Espada expressed pride in Santa’s performance, seeing it as a significant moment for both the player and the team.
“Proud of Santa,” Espada shared via MLB.com. “It’s a big night for him and his family. This moment is huge for the organization.”
Before calling on Santa, Imai walked three early batters but settled down quickly. Okert also allowed a walk during his inning. This game marked Houston’s 17th regular-season no-hitter. Their overall tally includes 18 no-hitters, counting postseason games, like the 2022 World Series combined no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The last occurrence of a no-hitter in the majors happened with Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers, resulting in a 12-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 4, 2024. No complete-game no-hitter has been achieved since Blake Snell’s performance for the San Francisco Giants against the Cincinnati Reds on August 2, 2024.
Previously, Ronel Blanco pitched a no-hitter for the Astros in a 10-0 win against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 1, 2024, which was Espada’s first managerial win. Notably, the Astros have accomplished three of the past seven, and five of the last 11, major league no-hitters.
The Astros, now at 24-31, aim to continue leveraging this momentum as they prepare for the second game in their four-game series against the Rangers, currently at 24-29, on Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. ET.
