Alleged Vandalism at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Under Investigation

President Donald Trump announced that another individual has been arrested in relation to the alleged vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. According to a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that six arrests have been made, and seven individuals cited concerning the damage.

Reports have surfaced about claims of vandalism, though no concrete evidence has been presented. Observations of the pool indicate the blue sealant is peeling, with chunks floating on the water surface. Algae accumulation has also turned the water green. Trump mentioned that the Interior Department will release photographs of the alleged damage.

On Saturday, Trump claimed that a 250-foot-long gash was cut into the pool. In a recent post, he expanded on this, describing numerous slashes across a 350-foot length, made using sharp implements. He insinuated that the damage was performed in a criminal manner, likely under the cover of darkness.

“Likewise, the small area at the bottom of the Pool was cut and powerfully lifted off the surface, leaving very jagged, uneven edges,” he wrote.

Trump also accused individuals of adding illegal chemicals to the water, threatening a 10-year prison term for the destruction or attempted destruction. Neither the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, nor the Interior Department have commented.

Among those implicated in these accusations is U.S. Olympic canoeist David “Davey” Hearn, who reported he was detained after inspecting the peeling coating. He maintained he did not damage any part of the pool, stating the condition remained unchanged after leaving.

Hearn reportedly faced arrest without clarity on the federal law he allegedly breached. The charges against him remain unspecified.

Neama Rahmani, a former Department of Justice prosecutor, pointed out that federal cases often involve felonies, implying these cases may involve complexities due to political dynamics. Rahmani noted that misdemeanor cases usually entail a citation and court appearance, potentially resulting in up to a year in imprisonment or probation with fines. He attributed Trump’s severe penalty threat to the arrested individuals.

Trump indicated that repairs might necessitate partial drainage of the pool, coordinated with celebrations of the nation’s 250th independence anniversary. According to him, large sections of grass surrounding the pool are also undergoing replacement.

The Reflecting Pool has received significant attention from Trump, whom he depicted it as previously neglected. Prior to renovation commencement this spring, he criticized its condition, pointing out longstanding algae issues. A $14-million renovation introduced a new liner and “American flag blue” coating as part of the President’s revitalization efforts.
