American Eating Habits Are Shifting Toward High-Protein Options

American eating habits are moving toward high-protein options, leading major fast-food chains to rethink traditional morning foods to cater to consumer demand for functional nutrition.

Benefits of Protein at Breakfast

Nutrition experts point out that consuming protein at breakfast stabilizes blood sugar levels, reduces mid-morning cravings, and supports muscle maintenance. They emphasize that protein-rich breakfasts are crucial for weight management compared to carbohydrate-heavy choices.

Tanya Freirich, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Charlotte, North Carolina, highlighted the importance of consistent protein intake. “The best time to eat protein is consistently throughout the day,” she stated. “Protein in meals helps stabilize your blood sugar after eating, and is crucial for muscle maintenance, repair, and growth.”

Nutritionists advise treating indulgent drive-thru options as occasional treats and recommend balancing high-fat morning meals with fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains throughout the rest of the day.

The Fast-Food Industry’s Response

Restaurant brands are getting creative, reimagining the classics through the lens of protein-rich nutrition. Chick-fil-A, for instance, has embraced this trend by converting the traditional Southern dish of chicken and waffles into a high-protein morning option.

“We know that many of our guests want meals higher in protein to start their day without sacrificing flavor,” said Allison Duncan, director of menu & packaging at Chick-fil-A. The Chicken & Waffles Breakfast Sandwich offers an unexpected way for guests to prioritize protein in their routine.

Competitors have expanded their morning menus to include items like egg bites, Greek yogurt parfaits, and customizable meat options as diners seek higher protein counts.

The Importance of Protein Quality

Health professionals warn that the quality and source of breakfast protein matter as much as quantity. “There is a big difference between types of protein sources,” Freirich explained. “An omelet with vegetables and a chicken, waffle, bacon, and egg sandwich may contain the same grams of protein, but the latter will have more saturated fat and calories.”

She cautioned that highly processed fast-food proteins can leave diners feeling sluggish, rather than energized. “Processed and high-fat proteins are less healthy due to fat and sodium content, slowing digestion,” Freirich stated. “A fast-food meal with fried chicken, egg, and bacon may leave you feeling overfull and lethargic.”

Balanced Diet Recommendations

Freirich advises moderation rather than complete elimination for those who enjoy fast food. “If you love chicken and waffles, perhaps consume them only occasionally,” she said. “Even the healthiest diets include treats and once-in-a-while foods in moderation.”

She recommends balancing indulgent drive-thru breakfasts with vegetables, fruits, and fiber throughout the day. “If you crave a chicken and waffles breakfast, balance your day with plenty of vegetables, fruits, and fiber at lunch and dinner,” Freirich advised.

Including more protein might be right for some, but a healthy diet also requires sufficient vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains.
