Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is anticipated to resign in the near future following the White House’s acceptance of his resignation. This information comes from a person familiar with the situation and a White House official. Last week, NBC News disclosed Driscoll’s intention to leave the administration by Labor Day after communicating this to close associates.
Driscoll, who has been respected by lawmakers from both political parties, had a meeting at the White House last week regarding his future, as stated by three U.S. officials. However, the outcome of the meeting remains unclear. Driscoll has occupied the role since February 2025 and is known to have strong ties with Vice President JD Vance.
Driscoll’s departure follows the exit of other prominent Defense Department officials, such as Navy Secretary John Phelan and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, who were removed earlier in the year. The Wall Street Journal initially reported on Driscoll’s resignation.
In a statement released Monday evening, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly commended Driscoll’s contributions, saying, “Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again at the Department of the Army by providing outstanding leadership during historic military operations, restoring an emphasis on readiness and lethality, assisting with negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and more.” She added that Driscoll’s work alongside the Commander-in-Chief and the Secretary of War has made the U.S. Army stronger than ever.
Driscoll has experienced disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on several matters, which included Hegseth’s removal of key Pentagon officials such as George and Phelan. Additionally, Driscoll has obstructed the advancement of several senior Army officers. A source familiar with the situation stated that Driscoll had raised concerns about Army transformation and readiness, particularly regarding Hegseth’s actions to halt these efforts, specifically citing the firing of key generals responsible.
The Pentagon deferred questions about Driscoll to the Army, which has not yet responded to requests for comment. The situation continues to unfold, and additional information will be provided as updates become available.
