Arrests Made Following Street Takeover on I-75 in Florida

Four individuals were apprehended after authorities reported a street takeover that halted all northbound lanes of Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County, Florida, early Saturday. This incident led to a high-speed chase reaching speeds of 140 mph.

The event commenced around 1:30 a.m. close to mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa. Florida Highway Patrol traffic cameras recorded a large assembly of vehicles blocking traffic, with some drivers performing burnouts in the middle of the interstate.

As troopers arrived, video footage depicted vehicles dispersing quickly, with drivers and onlookers scrambling back to their vehicles. Most participants were permitted to leave without charges, but one green BMW reportedly sped away, prompting a trooper to pursue it.

Reports indicated the BMW accelerated to around 140 mph — twice the speed limit — before eventually stopping in a parking lot after exiting the interstate. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Yulian Lugo, was arrested. He faces charges of aggravated fleeing to elude and participating in a street takeover, both classified as felony offenses.

Additionally, three passengers, aged 24 and two at 18, were detained and charged with misdemeanor highway racing. All four individuals were booked at the Hillsborough County Jail.

Street takeovers involve participants engaging in stunts like burnouts on public roads, attracting crowds. These activities pose significant safety risks and are a growing focus for law enforcement in Florida and nationally.
