Several individuals were arrested over the weekend for allegedly vandalizing the newly refurbished Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This event led to a strong response from President Donald Trump and an increase in site security.
Journalist Emily Miller shared a video on social media showing a man dressed in lime-green racing gear being questioned by a National Guardsman before his arrest by U.S. Park Police. The man was identified as 67-year-old David Hearn, a former Olympian, charged with a misdemeanor for destruction of government property.
National Park Service employees and contractors were seen using vacuums to remove algae from the Reflecting Pool. Hearn explained that after a bike ride, he noticed a detached piece of the pool liner and reached into the water. Despite claims, he stated he did not grab any equipment being used to manage algae growth.
Hearn maintained his innocence, asserting, “I didn’t vandalize anything.” He recounted a past incident from 1996 when he was arrested on a different charge, which was later dismissed.
Emily Miller reported that on Friday, seven individuals were detained in separate incidents for entering the pool, prompting heightened security measures. Hearn’s involvement was part of these incidents.
President Trump addressed the events on Truth Social, confirming multiple arrests and expressing dismay at the vandalism against national monuments. He highlighted the serious consequences that such actions entail and announced immediate repair efforts.
Park Police have faced ongoing challenges with vandalism at the Reflecting Pool amid scrutiny following a $14.8 million restoration project completion.
The White House and related parties have not provided immediate comments regarding these events.
