Gallaudet University, a renowned institution for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, recognizes that not all new students are proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) when they arrive. To address this, the university offers a program designed to help them learn.
Recently, students participated in JumpStart, an ASL immersion orientation program held at the university in Washington, D.C. Even before the academic year begins, these students engage in various activities that focus on ASL learning. One such activity involves a game where students must work out who among them is the ‘assassin.’ This interactive approach emphasizes language skills in a fun and engaging manner.
An example from the game: one student, communicating through ASL, questioned another, asking, ‘Bro, why are you saying me?’ This demonstrates how the program integrates language learning with social interaction.
By offering immersive experiences like JumpStart, Gallaudet University ensures that all students have the opportunity to improve their ASL proficiency, enhancing their overall educational experience.
