ATLANTA – As the World Cup semifinals between England and Argentina approach at Atlanta Stadium, significant security measures are underway. The FBI and Atlanta Police Department are leading efforts to ensure the event’s safety.
Drone Surveillance and Control
The FBI and local police employ drones to detect potential threats both on the ground and in the sky. The FBI enforces the Federal Aviation Administration’s Temporary Flight Restrictions around the stadium. Since the World Cup began, they have confiscated over 600 drones nationwide, with 86 seized in Atlanta alone.
Special Agent Marlo Graham explained the FBI’s system for identifying unauthorized drones in restricted airspace, adding that agents work to neutralize any potential threat. Drones are safely landed if they breach the flight-restricted areas. The threat assessment varies based on a drone’s proximity to the stadium and its size.
“The closer the drone to the venue, the larger the crowd,” Graham stated. Having a closed dome stadium in Atlanta offers an advantage. The goal is to prevent disruptions, such as an unintentional drone landing during critical moments of the match.
Role of the Atlanta Police Department
The Atlanta Police Department’s Drone Unit plays a crucial role by helping the FBI track down individuals operating drones in restricted zones. According to Sgt. Kindu Franklin, many operators are hobbyists seeking exciting footage for social media, without intending harm. However, the capability to weaponize drones requires a proactive approach in monitoring.
The police department focuses on surveillance, checking for threats, traffic issues, and illegal drone activity. Drones provide command staff with aerial views not possible from the ground, enhancing situational awareness.
Implementation and Technology
The APD Drone Unit, led by Sgt. James Cunningham, can launch drones remotely. Some are deployed from strategically placed stations across the city. These drones are controlled from SUVs using computers and controllers, including PlayStation devices.
These drone docks ensure continuous aerial surveillance, assisting with emergencies. They provide live data on police body cameras and vehicles, improving field coordination. For the World Cup, this technology enhances response time and offers a widened perspective on incidents.
Since June, the drone unit has surpassed 1,400 flights and accumulated over 550 flight hours. This operational scale is noteworthy compared to many units nationwide.
Guidelines and Recommendations
FBI officials urge hobbyist drone pilots to be aware of flight restrictions in their zones. A one-mile restriction applies around stadiums on non-match days, increasing to three miles on game days.
As the event nears, the focus remains on maintaining security and ensuring the safety of all attendees. The strategic use of drones appears instrumental in achieving these safety objectives.
