Audrey Hennings: A Resilient Athlete Shines for Lincoln-Way Central

Audrey Hennings, a sophomore at Lincoln-Way Central, embodies tenacity. Behind the plate in softball, she’s unwavering. On the basketball court, she’s relentless, unafraid of the physical toll her dedication demands. This resilience was evident when she sustained an injury while playing basketball. ‘During basketball season, I crashed into the wall and fractured my left elbow,’ Hennings revealed. ‘I knew it was coming, but I couldn’t stop. I was sidelined for about six weeks. It was challenging.’

On a Thursday, Hennings played both a catching and batting role flawlessly for the Knights, leading to a 7-1 victory over Sandburg in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way Central Regional semifinal in New Lenox. Her performance included going 2-for-4, securing a run, a stolen base, and an RBI. Jenna Lee contributed with a home run and pitched the win, while Hope Davis and Bridget Barz each added two hits.

Hennings’ remarkable performance was highlighted during the game on May 20, 2026, against Sandburg.

Sandburg, with a 19-15 record, saw notable contributions from Samira Matarieh, who secured two hits and an RBI, and Olivia Miele, who hit a double. Meanwhile, Hennings’ contributions included a single and the first run for Lincoln-Way Central in the third inning, as well as driving in Juno Lundquist in the fourth inning. ‘It was great,’ Hennings stated. ‘I felt extremely nervous before the game. Setting the tone early is crucial for my team.’

Hennings comes from a tough family. Her brother, Aiden, plays as a senior defensive lineman at Lincoln-Way Central and has committed to Drake. Audrey continues to demonstrate resilience. Her challenges didn’t stop at basketball. During an April 1st tournament, she was hit on the same elbow that hadn’t fully healed, sidelining her for another four weeks. ‘It was frustrating,’ said Hennings. ‘I was eager to return to the field.’

Now that she’s back, Hennings continues to make significant contributions. She currently boasts a .403 batting average, with 16 runs and 10 stolen bases. Jeff Tarala, Lincoln-Way Central’s coach, praises not just her statistics but her vigorous attitude. ‘Audrey exemplifies toughness,’ Tarala noted. ‘She’s competitive and shows athleticism on the field.’

For pitcher Jenna Lee, Hennings is a crucial partner. ‘Pitching with Audrey is exciting,’ said Lee. ‘We sync well, reducing my tension. She anticipates my throws. We motivate each other before going up to the plate.’

Lee shared a smile when recalling how Hennings claimed to be nervous ahead of a game. ‘Despite her claims, Audrey exudes confidence,’ Lee said. ‘On the field, I never doubt her capability. Her presence is reassuring.’

Audrey Hennings’ journey is marked by resilience and a strong bond with her teammates, particularly with Jenna Lee, creating a formidable partnership on the field.
