Researchers at the University of Arizona are exploring how the manner in which owners talk to their pets may influence human health. The development of a system called AURAL-Pet aims to analyze these interactions more thoroughly. This system is essential for understanding the nuanced relationship between humans and pets.
Purpose of AURAL-Pet
AURAL-Pet, highlighted in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry, serves as a tool for examining everyday exchanges with pets. Dara Jonkoski, leading the study, sees potential in identifying communication styles that could positively affect well-being. She noted that analyzing these interaction styles might guide pet owners towards approaches that enhance the well-being of both parties.
Research Findings
The study tested AURAL-Pet on 5,072 recordings, involving 240 participants. This demonstrated that the coding system is adaptable for future research into human-pet relationships. Jonkoski described AURAL-Pet as a conversion tool, translating audio into measurable insights about how people relate to their pets.
In these recordings, owners often shared thoughts, described pet behaviors, or discussed general topics like the weather. Megan Mueller from Tufts University commended AURAL-Pet as a valuable methodology for grasping human-pet dynamics.
Impact on Human-Pet Interactions
The coding system encompasses 30 variables detailing various human-pet interactions, such as using ‘baby-talk’ or treating pets as confidantes. While AURAL-Pet doesn’t simulate conversations, it quantifies ordinary interactions already taking place.
AURAL-Pet is also applied in the C.A.R.E. study, examining mental health data from adults over 60. Researchers aim to explore whether more positive pet interactions align with better mental health outcomes for older adults.
“AURAL-Pet provides a fascinating look into the role of pets in daily life,” said Jonkoski. “With more data, insights into these relationships can lead to better health strategies.”
